Immersed in the rich traditions of Japanese food culture during a two-week crash course led by the three Michelin-starred chef, a true love story with Japan unfolded. Over the years, Rene brought many different teams to Japan for inspirational trips, and today, we have eight team members from Japan. This deep connection led to our first popup in Tokyo in 2015 and the development of an extensive network of craftspeople, artisans, chefs, farmers, foragers, and more throughout Japan. During the first pandemic lockdown in April 2020, while reading about Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, Rene stumbled upon images of the newly built Ace Hotel in Kyoto. Inspired and seeking a fresh start after the incredibly challenging period of covid, he shared images of Ace Hotel with colleagues, sparking the idea of a pop-up in Kyoto once the pandemic was over. Little did we know it would take over three years to realize this dream. However, this gave us ample time to prepare. Over those three years, we extensively explored every corner of Kyoto and Japan at large, from mountains and temples to wineries, miso factories, noodle shops, Michelin-starred restaurants, and beyond. In 2023, our team of over one hundred arrived in Kyoto, each driven by their own hunger for discovery. Individually and collectively, we embarked on day trips, weekend excursions, and dedicated exploration into Kyoto’s vibrant restaurant, art, ramen, and coffee scenes, uncovering incredibly special places all worthy of experiencing.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0613/5998/0743/files/NM1065_7uq1b1_4b956c58-5de8-41cc-92fd-3bba0a346886.jpg?v=1764635811
nytt-rom-no-96
Nytt Rom No.96
NYTT ROM is a Norwegian magazine presenting Scandinavian design, architecture and living. Starting close to home, we wander through the beautiful listed Copenhagen apartment of artist couple, ANN SOPHIE VON BÜLOW AND ULRIK HELTOFT who were at pains while renovating to preserve its soul but also make it a family home. Heading to Milan, we look at the meticulous details of the studio and the home of architects. FANNY BAUER GRUNG AND DAVID LOPEZ QUINCOCES, where the past has been reconfigured but also embedded with elements of fantasy for the future. In Mexico, we visit two projects firmly connected to the rich national heritage that blend both indoors and outdoors. In the capital, the founders of KURIMANZUTTO galleries put their faith in architect ALBERTO KALACH to transform the ruins of a former convent into an art-filled home that is as much garden as house. It follows creators who stray from the path and relinquish the rules of control.

Jewellery designer Catherine Rochtus lets materials speak for themselves. The trio behind Newchild gallery lets its artists be the guides. In an industry of followers, fashion creative Florence Cools values her autonomy. Darshana Shilpi Rouget encourages art to flow beyond its frame.
Moving closer into our true selves can be a journey as slight as leaning into assurance, or as strong as moving across an ocean. Julie Claes of Studio STRAF finds peace in the shade, while Tom van Dorpe finds his natural pace in Paris.
Sometimes our destination can be found in the way we live and the buildings we inhabit. We travel with Axel Vervoordt through his home Castle ‘s-Gravenwezel and down a hidden path in the forest to his wabi pavilion designed with architect Tatsuro Miki. With architect Hans Verstuyft, we explore a minimalist family home near Antwerp that finds its heart in a historic footprint.

Many people journey their lifetimes to find the feeling of home.
Writer Michael Gardner considers how time changes us and diverts us our paths – how memories of personal tragedy ripen, how the words of Zen master and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh resonate, and how 365 flowers can bloom and fade. His thoughts unfold to a rich, painterly and mystical photographic essay that asks us to keep looking deeper.

Through poetry, We contemplates the inwards journey to feeling present inside yourself – illustrated by the vivacious images of visual creator Ramy Moharam Fouad and make up designer Joek Janssens that capture the sense of unbridled individual freedom this can bring.

3 different covers

Ark Journal Volume XIII contemplates the quiet force of obsession, a power that fuels creation and transformation, that drives to protect, preserve and perfect. With deep respect for the histories embedded in buildings and honouring local crafts and traditions, they work with, rather than against, existing structures while valuing complexity over uniformity, continuity over rupture.

In rural France, Pollet Pinet Architectes breathes new life into forgotten buildings, reviving vernacular traditions through local craft and subtle innovation. In New York, experience how gallerist Suzanne Demisch and collector Jeffrey Graetsch live in spaces where time is not concealed, but embraced. We visit Bosco Sodi’s house and studios in Mexico that embody the raw synergy between architecture and art, and artist and food visionary Laila Gohar in her New York loft, an interior where creativity, design and storytelling merge. Like beer and whiskey, wine has propped up humans during significant historical moments and formed an inextricable tie to food. But while its role has waxed in gastronomy, it has also achieved great renown for inspiring creativity in literature, music, and art. With more varieties than any other food product—and more than 10,000 types produced each year—wine is often appraised by a complex set of geographical factors, harvest year, and winery origin stories. Today, in response to the intensifying climate crisis, independent wineries are disrupting tradition with bold efforts to farm organically and engineer new grape varieties.
Founded in 1996 by Jonny Johansson and three partners, with only 10,000 euros, Acne was first launched as a small advertising and design agency in Stockholm. It was first produced by Buddhist monks for medicinal purposes sometime between the fourth and fifth centuries. Depending on the primary ingredient, the drink is categorized into malt, grain, or blended whiskey, and the manufacturing method determines its type into Scotch, Irish, bourbon, Canadian whiskey and other varieties. Since the unique aroma and flavor are formed through the long-term aging in oak barrels, many variables play a role in producing quality whiskey. Master distillers, who oversee production, control these variables and study the combination of flavors to craft a signature formula that reflects a distillery’s personality. Recently, independent bottling companies that do not own distilleries have been ramping up their efforts, innovating with experiments like not printing the age on the label or breaking the limitations of resting times.
