Can Lis

Can Lis

We are pleased to present Can Lis, Jørn Utzon, a visual homage to one of the 20th century’s most iconic residences. Perched atop a Mallorcan cliff and nearly concealed by the indigenous marés stone from which it was constructed, Can Lis embodies an early ideal of design inspired by place.

This publication features photographs by Simon Watson that trace the movement of light throughout the compound, which served as Utzon’s family home for over two decades following his work on the Sydney Opera House. A curated selection of archival photographs, sketches, and blueprints from Utzon’s private collection guides readers from the home’s initial plans to its everyday inhabitation.

A pivotal essay by the late Jørn Utzon delves into his profound connection with nature, offering readers insight into the inspirations behind his architectural philosophy. Complementing this, his son, Jan Utzon, shares personal reflections on the family’s deep-rooted ties to Mallorca in a conversation with Apartamento’s editorial director, Robbie Whitehead.

Line Nørskov Davenport, director of exhibitions at the Utzon Center, contemplates Utzon’s departure from the Sydney Opera House project and the solace he discovered in Mallorca. She ponders over an initial sketch that inspired Can Lis, questioning, “Is this paradise?”—a vision ultimately realized in the home’s serene vistas, gently stirred by the sea’s salt breeze.

Sponsored by Ferm Living, Can Lis, Jørn Utzon features an exclusive foreword by Philipp Materna, head of brand and design.
